Description - Not just a guilty pleasure: A feminist analysis of "Sex and the City".

Based on the eponymous book by Candace Bushnell, the show Sex and the City (SATC) chronicles the sex and dating lives of four single women living in New York City. Feminist fans praised it for portraying single women as independent and successful, while proponents of the show's anti-feminism argued that it presents a heteronormative message. These criticisms have not prevented feminists from enjoying SATC, but they have forced feminist fans to assign it "guilty pleasure" status. In "Not Just a Guilty Pleasure: A Feminist Analysis of Sex and the City," I highlight SATC's feminism by showing how it challenges popular understandings of feminism as static and one-dimensional, and argue that its consistent theme emphasizing female solidarity challenges traditional depictions of heteronormativity on television. I also interrogate the concept of the "guilty pleasure" as gendered and argue that women taking pleasure from flawed yet decidedly feminist television characters is an empowering act.
